In the late 1800s, a group of Austrian artists began to consider the possibilities of art beyond the classic techniques in which they had been trained. As a result, the Vienna Secession art movement was founded in 1897 by some of the most prominent Austrian artists of the time, including Gustav Klimt, Max Kurzweil, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and others.
The group went on to develop a wide array of spectacularly creative artwork. Their rejection of conservative techniques and styles allowed them to explore new approaches to their art that were free of historical influences. Rather than having a consistent style across all paintings within the movement, the group focused on this philosophical approach of artistic freedom.
