Symbolism & Sensuality
Born in 1862, Klimt grew up in poverty but worked his way through art school to become a mural painter for public buildings. Eventually, he began to focus on his own artwork, becoming one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession movement, which celebrated artwork that experimented with styles outside of the academic tradition. Klimt's work often centered around allegories and used overt sexual symbolism that made him a somewhat scandalous figure at the time. Even by today's standards, there's an undeniable sensuality in many of his pieces that make them instantly striking. His most famous work, "The Kiss" painted in 1907, is an excellent example of his experimentation with color and form as well as his sensual subjects.
