George Seurat Oil Paintings

The masterful works of Neo-Impressionist master Georges Seurat set the course for the beloved avant-garde movement, and remain on the bleeding-edge of art and culture to this day. Seurat's brilliant use of interwoven colors and lights, separating strokes individually and purposefully using carefully picked pigments later became known as Divisionism. His striking use of precisely applied dots skyrocketed the style of Pointillism to fame. The French artist's pointillist masterpiece Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is largely considered one of the finest examples of pointillism by art historians. Seurat was born in 1859 in Paris and created his first large-scale painting, Bathers at Asniéres, at the age of 24. His most famous work, Sunday Afternoon, was painted in the summer of 1884 and took him two years to complete.

Other notable works, including The Eiffel Tower and Le Chahut, helped Seurat gain some commercial success later in his life. Unfortunately, the artist died at age 31 at the hands of an unknown illness, which is often attributed to a form of meningitis.
