Frederick Arthur Bridgman was an American artist whose work was inspired by French painter, Jean-Leon Gerome, whose art often displayed Middle Eastern themes. Bridgman also took up painting these 'oriental' subjects after traveling and visiting North Africa for the first time. His style was heavily influenced by the Realism movement, showing scenes from everyday life. Extraordinary detail is put into the surroundings of his subjects, so the atmosphere of the painting is also prominent. Bridgman also makes heavy use of contrast between highlights and shadows in many of his paintings. His use of bright colors and emphasis on lighting create beautifully composed paintings!
