While the American frontier was being explored by people such as Lewis and Clark, in the settled American regions there was a different form of exploration going on. Artists were composing works that were greatly influenced by life on the frontier and all that came with it. Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait was one of the preeminent figures in this movement. His work involving the American frontier typically featured natural scenes that were dotted with animals, wide-open landscapes and more.
Forest scenes were a recurring topic in Tait's art - some of his more notable works specifically depicted deer.
