View All Available FramesGallery-wrap is a modern style of displaying art over thick wooden bars. It is a stretched canvas that doesn't have any visible staples or nails holding the fabric to the wooden stretcher bars so the painting could be hung unframed. Gallery-wrap is a very popular way to display art, however, because the edges of the canvas are wrapped over the thick bars, about two inches of the painting from each side are lost in the wrap.

Artist: Sir John Everett Millais
Type: Hand Painted Oil Reproduction
Painting Size: Large 24" X 36"
Orientation: Horizontal
Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais was painted between 1851 and 1852 based on the Shakesperian play, Hamlet. This piece captures a scene that is considered to be one of the most poetic deaths in literature. As Ophelia is making garland of wildflowers, and as she is climbing a tree to hang the garland the branch breaks. Leaving Ophelia suspended in the water due to the air in her closes yet slowly sinking to her muddy grave. Unable to escape because of the weight of her dress, Ophelia embraces her death, laying in the water singing. Millais depicted this character in a pose that is typically used for saints and martyrs with open arms and hands. The highly prominent poppy seen was chosen because of the flower's symbolic meaning of sleep and death. In staying true to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood styles with the attention to color, the subject matter, depicting a woman who has lived a life awaiting happiness, only to find her destiny on the verge of death.
