Fauvism era paintings represent a departure from the strict interpretations of the genres that preceded them. Unlike the traditional ideals and conventions valued during prior periods, fauvist artists were drawn to the power of the colors on the canvas. Each painting was strongly focused on the colors being used and their composition, rather than being realistic. Our collection of fauvism paintings highlights many of the most noteworthy and respected pieces from the genre.
Although fauvism's reign as an art era was relatively brief (1904-1908), it is widely recognized as a period that was exponentially more influential than its four-year run would indicate. Notable contributors within the genre include Albert Marquet, Charles Camoin, Louis Valtat and a number of others. However, French artists Henri Matisse and André Derain are typically regarded as the pioneers of fauvism. Our collection of fauvist art includes a number of notable and less heralded names that represent the genre. These works encompass the most unique and appreciable qualities of fauvism.
