The online art gallery overstockArt.com, published today its annual Top 10 list of most romantic oil paintings for Valentine’s Day. Topping the chart for the first time is Frederic Leighton’s lust-filled masterpiece “The Fisherman and the Syren.” Other artists named on the 2013 Valentine’s Day Top 10 Romantic Oil Paintings list include Gustav Klimt, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, August Macke, Amedeo Modigliani, Edouard Manet and Egon Schiele.

More than 3,500,000 page views to overstockArt.com’s Romantic Art Gallery in the past year were tracked. According to the click tracking, “The Fisherman and the Syren,” was the most sought after painting clicked at nearly nine percent, and Gustav Klimt’s magnum opus “The Kiss” came in a close second, garnering eight percent of the clicks.
The The Fisherman and the Syren was painted by the English Victorian Classical painter, Lord Frederick Leighton between 1856 and 1858. The painting depicts the fatal seduction of a fisherman by a beautiful yet deadly mermaid. The fisherman seems completely transfixed in the moment while the siren clutches to his body as she subdues her prey with passion and lust to submission.
