12 Days of Winter Art

Winter can be hostile and uninviting. But, for those who stop complaining about inclement weather and shorter days for a moment and take it all in, it can also be incredibly beautiful. There’s a certain peaceful stillness in winter that is absent at all other times of the year. We are here to provide you with a selection of some of our favorite winter pieces. Hopefully you are able to find one that would fit perfectly into your holiday décor.

  1. The Fletcher Mansion, New York City- Jean Francois Raffaelli

A quiet scene and a regal mansion is the focus of this lovely painting of a winter day. Viewers see the luxurious private residence of Isaac D. Fletcher, a wealthy New York banker and stockbroker. The mansion’s regal look is beautifully captured in this painting, which features muted tones that showcase the serene appearance covered in snow.  This piece shows an Impressionist style mixed with Raffaelli’s signature Realism that marked what the artist became famous for.

  1. Adoration of the Shepherds- Rembrandt

Rembrandt painted a series of scenes from the life of Christ for the Stadholder of the Dutch Republic and this painting is based on ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’ from that series. This is painted as an almost domestic scene, with details of the characters barely visible in the dim light. There is Joseph, Mary, two shepherds and the baby’s crib in the center. It is a warm and inviting version of the Christmas story so many of us are familiar with.

  1. Arctic Scene- William Bradford

Bradford’s love of all things nautical is considered an essential contribution to American romanticism. The arctic may sound like a stark, cold and unforgiving place, but William Bradford saw this extreme region in another way. Arctic Scene shows golden light infusing the canvas from edge to edge, illuminating glacial formations along with a towering ship. This masterpiece displayed the arctic region with a sense hope, bravery and adventure.

  1. Angels II- Justyna Kopania

Angels II is a beautiful image that will bring light to every room and joy during the holiday season. In her words when she paints she tries to show the ‘world’, which could be seen by looking at reality that surrounds us, from another perspective. Her use of bright colors reflects the child-like wonder that the holidays hold for so many, while using a classic symbol of the angels.

  1. Red House and Spruces- Edvard Munch

In this dark winter scene created by master Expressionist, Edvard Munch, the focus is one the red house in the center of the forest setting. It shows a bit of optimism in the shadowy world the artist creates. It doesn’t have the same joyful holiday feeling as others on the list, but casts a more introspective view of the season.

  1. The Magpie- Claude Monet

The Magpie, painted in 1869 near Etretat in Normandy. Some believe that this was the first Impressionist painting, created five years before the movement was named. This painting focuses on a single magpie siting on a fence set in a cold winter setting. It is believed that a series of severe winters in France caused there to be a high number of winter landscapes created by famous Impressionist painters. Monet uses colored shadows to show the way light reflects off the drifts in the snow in a unique and beautiful way.

  1. The Shapes of Winter- John Lofgreen

The Shapes of Winter is a beautiful print of a winter landscape and wildlife by John Lofgreen. It depicts a majestic group of wild buffalo standing in the falling snow.  The calm and tranquil feeling will have a positive effect on your entire room. Bring some of the natural wonder of winter into the home with this realistic image.

  1. Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning- Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro was inspired by the hustle and bustle of Paris at the end of the 19th century. In Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning, this Impressionist artist perfectly captured how the winter snow adds to the depth of colors and light from the street below.  The boulevard is alive as people come and go along the chilly street and sidewalks. There’s a quiet peacefulness from Pissarro’s vantage point up above, but you can almost hear the din of conversation, horses and carriages below carried along the crisp wind.

  1. Sleigh Ride- Peggy Miller

In this painting Peggy Miller tries to capture a soft, beautiful, serene feeling that beauty of nature gives to her. She hopes that her collectors can be touched by nature in the same way as she is and enjoy the beauty that is around us and is given to us each day. Sleigh Ride by Peggy Miller is no exception, as it showcases an idyllic winter landscape complete with a snow-capped barn and a horse-drawn carriage from the point of view of the rider. It does an excellent job of drawing you in and keeping you engaged, so it’s the perfect fine art wall hanging for the rustic, country or down-to-earth living space.

  1. Rush Hour-Loretta Luglio

This is a fun and upbeat piece that shows the carefree possibilities of winter. It is a bustling scene with people skiing down a mountainside, with the brightly colored buildings surrounding them.  You can feel the energy as the racers move across the snow and it creates an electric feel to any setting. Winter sports have never looked better than this beautiful piece of art.

  1. The Cold- Susan Fischer

This dramatically created piece by Susan Fischer will give you the shivers. The bright blue is a contrast to the vast white background, accentuated by the sharp black lines of the trees. The gleam of the reflection on the water only adds to the frigid feel of the scene and illuminates the mountains rising in the background. The overall finish of this print is one of pristine winter beauty.

  1. Winter Magic 1- Emilia Milcheva

As the title suggests, this graphic print from Emilia Milcheva captures the wonder of a winter in the woods perfectly. The deep purples in the background compliment the falling shadows against the snow. The barren tree trunks could feel lonely, but instead they appear grand against the royal colored sky. It is both soothing and lovely to gaze at during the winter season.
